Color Matchup

Kate from Bower Bird and I worked together on this one. Using a photograph from my tornado shelter series, she pulled the colors out. Love what you picked Kate!

*Timely...Our hearts go out to those that were affected by the tornados over the last two days throughout the South

Scene Beat: Indie Rock Cribs with Lucero

Today's post is all about the (former) home of Memphis band Lucero
The whole band used to live together in a big loft, in Memphis. While they have all moved apart into their own homes, their fondness for the loft is apparent as the address is the title of their most recent record, 1372 Overton Park

Sitting above a church and a dollar store, in a corner building, the Lucero loft played host to many house shows over the years and always had a revolving door of roommates, with about seven bedrooms and a stage in the living room, you never really knew what you were going to get when you climbed the stairs to the loft.
Here, Roy Berry, drummer for Lucero, takes us on a tour of their indie rock crib....

Afterschool Oxford is throwing a party...

pintrest party that is!! I have been busy pinning lately and here is all you'll need for an awesome party.

                           The decor:
2.

The bar:
Make this your signature drink for the evening... Make one drink really well. Maybe make a pitcher of strawberry lemonade for the non-drinkers.

My own recipe for lemonade:
One large pitcher of water
Four lemons, sliced
One quart of strawberries, sliced
Sugar to taste

Put the slices of lemons, strawberries, and sugar in the water. Stir.
Leave in the fridge for at least four hours.
This can be made a day before.
Add ice and serve.
*I like to serve them in small mason jars with the lids on, so guests can just grab one from an ice bucket.
*Strawberries can be replaced with peaches, raspberries or blueberries

The Menu:
1/2/3/4/5/6

Enjoy!!

Wednesday: Weekly Picks 4/13- 4/22

Green Week kicks off in Oxford this week and the theme is Go Local... by way of going green rerooting the community. There are events scheduled everyday of the week, so you are sure to find something going on to get involved with. So this week's picks carry over until Earth Day, on the 22nd.

PICK ONE:
Mandolin Orange, a bluegrass duo from Chapel Hill are playing a free set at Snackbar tonight, the 13th. They are also having a two year anniversary party on Friday, the 15th, with drink specials and live music.

PICK TWO:
Here's a complete list of all the green week events. This is a great week to support local businesses. Get away from shopping on-line and get out and walk around the town, head to a Farmer's Market (Oxford, Taylor and Water Valley all have great ones in the area), or catch a movie Main Squeeze, outside. It's a great week to get involved and be outside.

PICK THREE:
Colour Revolt is playing in Starkville on Thursday, the 14th. There has been a venue change, so follow Colour Revolt or the Amelia twitter for an update.

Tuesday: Scene Beat- Record Store Day 2011

Record Store Day is coming up on this Saturday, April 16th. This is the day when local record stores get all the glory over sites like itunes and Amazon.
It's also the day that all over the country, bands and musicians play intimate in-stores and rare vinyl releases come out.
Click here for the list of all the in-store performances and
vinyl releases. My husband and I hope to order a bunch of new records from Insound on Saturday. Since we can't visit a record store here in Oxford, we would still like to support vinyl sites like Insound.
I would love to hear about the in-stores you might see or the records you hope to buy.

I wish we still had a record store in Oxford. Off Square Books has filled this position as best they can by selling some vinyl and cds. They also had Lou Barlow do an in-store last year which was pretty fantastic, but a full fledged record store would be wonderful!

On another note, one of my all time favorite bands ever, Archers of Loaf, is getting back together and doing a tour. I've seen them play three times... each show would still find its way to my top 20 shows of all time. They are a wonderful band, but live is where you feel all of their energy. AH-MAZZZE-ING!

Coming in the next few weeks... Lots of Scene Beat giveaways.
Stay tuned!
